What is TMD and what causes it?
The temporomandibular joints are the joints and ligaments found in the jaw. Disorders in this area can be caused by various factors, such as an improper bite, teeth grinding, physical trauma, or arthritis of the joint.
Inflammation or irritation in this joint can cause jaw pain, headaches, earaches, or pain in the neck or shoulders. Some people also complain of a tired feeling in the face, a clicking sound when the joint moves, or a locking of the jaw in the open or closed position.
How can TMD be treated?
Dr. Singh uses a combination of exams and scans of your facial bones, teeth, and sinuses to diagnose TMJ disorders. Treatments can range from applying cold packs to the face to surgery on the jaw, depending on the severity of the problem. Most dental professionals begin with the least invasive treatments and then proceed to more invasive ones if necessary.
Examples of initial treatments include jaw exercises and stretches, ice packs or moist heat, eating soft foods, and taking over-the-counter medications to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Even practicing relaxation techniques can help prevent pressure and tension in these joints.
The next level of treatment may include mouth guards that can be worn to protect teeth from damage and help correct some bite problems. Prescription antidepressants or anxiety medications may also be recommended to reduce grinding and clenching of the jaw.
