When teeth are missing, it is important to work with your dentist to find a solution to replace them. Missing teeth can lead to problems such as tooth movement, bite issues, difficulty chewing or speaking, and even bone loss in the jaw.

If you are missing teeth, ensure that you address the issue promptly with your College Park dentist. There are numerous options available for missing teeth, including bridges, implants, and dentures.

Dentures can be an effective solution for patients who have lost all or most of their natural teeth, helping them speak and eat normally. Dentures are removable artificial teeth and gums designed to fit each patient’s mouth and resemble natural teeth. Beyond their primary function of chewing, dentures also provide support to facial muscles, which helps maintain a normal facial appearance. This support can prevent sunken spots and sagging facial muscles.

What are the different types of dentures?

Although all dentures are removable and artificial, there are many types, and Dr. Singh can discuss with patients which type is best for each situation. Here are some of the most common types of dentures and how they are used.

Traditional or complete dentures are used when all the teeth are lost due to injury or decay. They are made of porcelain or acrylic and are secured by suction along with dental adhesives.

Partial dentures are for patients who have only some teeth missing. They are removable but are secured through metal clips rather than adhesives. Immediately after a patient’s teeth are extracted, they can be fitted with temporary dentures so they can continue to chew and speak clearly while waiting for a more permanent solution.

Snap-on dentures are crowns that can be removed. They stay secure by snapping onto a surgically placed implant in the jawbone.

Overdentures are another option for patients who have lost many, but not all, of their teeth. This type of denture covers any remaining teeth or implants, as well as areas without teeth.

How should I care for dentures, how long do they last?

Dentures are highly beneficial for patients missing teeth, as teeth perform many functions beyond chewing. However, regular care and maintenance of dentures are key to proper function and to avoiding embarrassing mishaps.

Dentures should always be removed and cleaned after eating. At least once a day, brush dentures with a soft-bristled brush using an ADA-approved denture cleaner. It is also important to clean your mouth after removing dentures. Use a soft toothbrush or gauze to clean your tongue, gums, and the roof of your mouth. Because of the material used, dentures need to remain moist to maintain their shape and last a long time; therefore, soaking them overnight is essential. Water or a special denture soaking solution can be used for this.

If you use denture cleaners and soaking solutions, make sure to rinse your dentures thoroughly before reinserting them into your mouth. The chemicals in these solutions are not meant for oral use but are intended for the material of your dentures. It is important to avoid abrasive cleaners and products containing bleach.

Finally, prioritize regular visits with Dr. Singh. This can help ensure a proper, comfortable fit and allows for occasional professional cleaning of your dentures.
